Crux

Description

Crux is the smallest constellation in the sky but one of the most famous. It appears on the flags of Australia, New Zealand, Brazil, Papua New Guinea, and Samoa. It points approximately toward the south celestial pole.

Mythology and History

The Southern Cross has no classical Greek mythology because it was not visible from the Mediterranean. Indigenous peoples of America and Australia have their own legends, often associating it with spiritual guides.

How to Observe

Visible only from the southern hemisphere and tropical latitudes. Best visibility in April-May. The line from Acrux to Gacrux extended points toward the south pole.
