Description

Capricornus is an ancient constellation, known since Babylonian times. It historically marked the winter solstice, giving its name to the Tropic of Capricorn. Its stars form an elongated triangle.

Mythology and History

Capricornus represents the goat Amalthea who nursed Zeus, or the god Pan who transformed into a goat-fish to escape the monster Typhon. Its hybrid form (goat-fish) is unique in the zodiac.

How to Observe

Visible from July to November. It is a faint constellation, best seen in dark skies. Algiedi is a double star visible to the naked eye.
