Aquarius

Description

Aquarius is a large constellation but with relatively faint stars. It contains several famous nebulae such as the Helix Nebula (NGC 7293), one of the nearest planetary nebulae to Earth.

Mythology and History

Aquarius represents Ganymede, the Trojan youth abducted by Zeus to be cupbearer to the gods on Olympus. It is also associated with Deucalion, the "Greek Noah" who survived the flood.

How to Observe

Visible from August to December. Look for the "water jar" asterism - a small group of stars forming the water bearer's urn.
