Virgo

Description

Virgo is the second largest constellation in the sky and the largest in the zodiac. It contains the Virgo Cluster, a huge concentration of galaxies. Spica, its main star, is one of the 20 brightest stars in the sky.

Mythology and History

Virgo is associated with multiple goddesses: Demeter (goddess of harvest), Astraea (goddess of justice who left Earth), and Persephone. The wheat ear she holds represents fertility and abundance.

How to Observe

Visible from March to July. Spica is easy to find by following the arc of the Big Dipper's handle: "arc to Arcturus, spike to Spica".
