Interpretation
Jìn, 晉, unfolds the most luminous image in the Book of Changes: Fire — the radiant clarity of the sun — rises above the Earth in the eternal dawn. The upper trigram Li (the Clinging, Fire) shines from above while Kūn (the Receptive, Earth) offers its immense surface as a stage for the light. There is no conflict between these trigrams: the earth receives light with gratitude and the light illuminates the earth with generosity. Jìn's progress is not the violent breakthrough of Dà Zhuàng (Hexagram 34) nor the effortful ascent of Shēng (Hexagram 46).
