Description

Perseus contains Algol, the "Demon Star," one of the first variable stars discovered. It also hosts the Double Cluster, visible to the naked eye, and is the radiant of the Perseid meteor shower.

Mythology and History

Perseus is the hero who killed Medusa and rescued Andromeda from the sea monster Cetus. He is depicted holding Medusa's head (marked by the star Algol) in one hand.

How to Observe

Best visibility from September to March. Algol varies in brightness every 2.87 days. The Double Cluster is spectacular with binoculars.
