Description

Although small, Lyra is notable for containing Vega, the fifth brightest star in the sky and one of the most studied. It also contains the Ring Nebula (M57), a famous planetary nebula.

Mythology and History

Lyra represents the instrument of Orpheus, the most talented musician in Greek mythology. After his death, Zeus placed the lyre in the sky. Orpheus could enchant all beings with his music.

How to Observe

Best visibility from May to November. Vega is easy to find as the brightest star in the summer sky. It forms the Summer Triangle with Deneb and Altair.
