Description

Cygnus forms the "Northern Cross," an asterism similar to but larger than the Southern Cross. Deneb is one of the most luminous stars known. Albireo is famous as one of the most beautiful double stars.

Mythology and History

The Swan represents Zeus in disguise to seduce Leda (mother of Helen of Troy and the twins Castor and Pollux). It is also associated with Orpheus, transformed into a swan to be near his lyre.

How to Observe

Best visibility from June to December. Deneb is part of the Summer Triangle along with Vega and Altair. The swan appears to "fly" along the Milky Way.
