Meaning

Unlike the Journey (10), which speaks of physical displacement, Change refers to the transformation of circumstances. And unlike the Funeral (19), which speaks of definitive endings, Change is transition: something ends so something new can begin, but the emphasis is on what is born, not what dies.
In directional Kipper, the position of Change relative to the significator reveals temporality: ahead indicates approaching changes; behind, recent changes whose effects are still being assimilated. Adjacent cards define the scope of change: with the House (20), it is a relocation or home renovation; with Work (34), it is a professional change; with Marriage (3), the couple dynamic transforms.
When Change appears next to Hope (36), the transformation leads to a promising future. With Great Fortune (26), the change brings unexpected abundance. But if Grief (32) is nearby, the process of change will be emotionally costly though necessary.

Card number 9 in the original Kipper captured the reality of a Bavaria in full industrial transformation. Published in an era when thousands of families were leaving the countryside for cities, when artisan trades were yielding to factories, and when social structure was being completely redefined, this card reflected an omnipresent theme in the lives of 19th-century querents: change as an unstoppable force.
In early editions, the image typically showed a scene of relocation or transition — a cart loaded with belongings, a door opening to a new space, or a figure in movement between two worlds. For Bavarians of the era, change was not a philosophical abstraction but a tangible reality that could mean leaving the family farm to seek work in Munich, emigrating to America, or adapting to the new laws of the recently unified German Empire.
In the modern context, Change retains its power but has adapted to contemporary transformations: midlife career changes, divorces, gender transitions, emigration for professional opportunities, personal reinvention after a crisis. In love, Change indicates the romantic dynamic is about to transform significantly. For couples, it can mean taking a step forward — moving in together, getting married, having a child — or a step elsewhere: separation, renegotiation of relationship terms, or a crisis forcing both to reconsider what they want.
For singles, this card is profoundly liberating. It signals the end of a pattern that has kept you trapped in relationships that do not work or in unchosen solitude. Something changes in you — your perspective, your priorities, your emotional availability — and that internal change attracts new external circumstances.
